چکیده

Congestion control plays an essential role in ATM networks to support di erent quality of service guarantees for a large variety of tra c types While for real time communications such as CBR and VBR services a preventive open loop congestion control mechanism is applied a reactive closed loop mechanism has been suggested for the ABR service class which was introduced aiming at data communication applications This paper presents a performance analysis of the rate based congestion control mech anism developed by the ATM Forum Using a di erential equation approach for the computation of the evolution of the allowed cell rate and the bu er content during steady state we derive closed form solutions to estimate the bu er space which must be provided in network nodes to avoid cell losses The solutions can be formulated for steady state conditions as well as for transient phases In our approach scenarios with and without priority for the resource management cells are considered From numerical examples we conclude that an appropriate setting of the control parame ters is important to achieve a reasonable performance of the rate based control mechanism In particular we are interested in limiting the required bu er size while enabling a fast reaction to changes of the available transmission capacity

Steady State Analysis of the Rate Based Congestion Control Mechanism for ABR Services in ATM Networks

Resource Requirements for ABR Explicit Rate Flow Control: Deterministic and Probabilistic Analyses

ATM Available Bit Rate (ABR) service is intended to o er low cell loss for nonreal-time data sources that can respond to closed-loop ow control. ATM Forum Tra c Management Speci cation Version 4.0 de nes the various parameters used in the ABR ow control, as well as the source, destination, and switch behaviors. However, the switch designers and service providers are free to choose the method of...

Worst Case Buffer Requirements For Tcp Over ABR

ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) is the technology chosen for the Broadband Integrated Services Digital Network (B-ISDN). The ATM ABR (available bit rate) service can be used to transport \best-e ort" tra c. In this paper, we extend our earlier work on the bu er requirements problem for TCP over ABR. Here, a worst case scenario is generated such that TCP sources send a burst of data at the time...

Performance and Bu ering Requirements of Internet Protocols over ATM ABR and UBR Services

The Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) networks are quickly being adopted as backbones over various parts of the Internet. This paper analyzes the performance of TCP/IP protocols over ATM network's Available Bit Rate (ABR) and Unspeciied Bit Rate (UBR) services. It is shown that ABR pushes congestion to the edges of the ATM network while UBR leaves it inside the ATM portion.

Tcp/ip Traffic over Atm Networks with Abr Flow and Congestion Control

In this paper, we compare the performance of TCP/IP trafc running on di erent rate based ABR ow control algorithms such as EFCI, ERICA and FMMRA by extensive simulations. The FMMRA algorithm is shown to exhibit the favorable features of least bu er requirement, fair bandwidth allocation to TCP connections, fast and accurate ACR rate adjustment according to the changes of network tra c, and the ...
